1. Hand-knotted rugs: traditional craftsmanship andlasting quality

A hand-knotted rug is a unique work oftextile craftsmanship. Although the artisan repeats the same precise movementthousands of times, no two knots are completely identical. This time-intensivemethod produces exceptionally durable rugs that can retain their beauty forgenerations when properly maintained.

From design drawing to weaving chart

The process begins with a detailed design.The pattern and colour placement are translated into a weaving chart thatguides the artisans throughout production. This preparation ensures that thewool or other chosen fibres reproduce the intended motif accurately.

The warp foundation and knotting process

A strong foundation is then created on theloom. Vertical cotton warp threads run along the length of the rug and supportthe tension generated during weaving. The artisan ties individual yarn knotsaround these warp threads, row by row, using a highly controlled manualtechnique.

In some workshops, a horizontal rod helpsmaintain even knot formation. The knot density is one of the key factors thatdetermines the precision of a hand-knotted rug: a higher number of knots allowsfor finer lines, more intricate patterns and greater visual detail. From thebottom of the loom upward, the rug gradually takes shape through thousands oftightly secured knots.

2. Hand-tufted rugs: flexibility for custom designs

A hand-tufted rug begins with a primarybacking fabric, often referred to as a canvas, stretched tightly over a frame.The rug design is drawn directly onto this surface. An artisan then uses atufting gun loaded with the selected yarn to insert loops or cut pile into thebacking.

This technique makes it possible to createcustom rugs in a wide range of shapes, colours, pile heights and textures.Hand-tufting is particularly suited to bespoke residential interiors, luxuryhospitality projects, boutiques, offices and other spaces that require apersonalised design with a shorter production time than a traditionalhand-knotted rug.

Securing and finishing the rug

Once the design has been fully tufted,adhesive is applied to the back of the rug to secure the yarn and preserve thepattern. A secondary backing is then added. This backing conceals the adhesivelayer, strengthens the rug and helps protect both the textile and the floorbeneath it.

3. Rug carving: adding relief and definition

After the pattern has been tufted, artisansmay use a finishing technique known as rug carving. The pile is carefullytrimmed along the outlines of the motif to create cleaner separations, enhanceddefinition and a sculpted three-dimensional effect.

Carving immediately gives the rug greaterdepth and visual movement. It is often used for luxury rugs, geometric designs,organic patterns and bespoke statement pieces where texture is an essentialpart of the design.
